CFP Note on Penalty Avoidance
Advance tax is a "pay-as-you-earn" obligation. Missing a due date triggers 234C interest at 1% per month on the shortfall — this cannot be avoided even if you pay the full amount later. Set calendar reminders for all four dates (15 Jun / 15 Sep / 15 Dec / 15 Mar). For business income, review your estimate each quarter and top up if income has risen — a small overpayment is always cheaper than 234B/234C interest.

Advance tax — paying as you earn, in four instalments
If your total tax liability for the year, after TDS, is ₹10,000 or more, the law expects you to pay it through the year rather than in one lump at the end — this is advance tax. It falls due in four instalments, and paying too little or too late attracts interest under Sections 234B and 234C, which quietly adds to your bill.
This calculator works out your advance-tax instalments for FY 2026-27 and the interest that applies if you fall short. It is especially relevant for the self-employed, professionals, and anyone with significant income beyond salary (capital gains, interest, rent) where TDS does not cover the full liability.
How this calculator works
- 1Enter your estimated annual income and tax liability, and any TDS already deducted.
- 2The calculator schedules the four instalments (by 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March).
- 3It flags any 234B/234C interest for underpayment or late payment.
Frequently asked questions
Who has to pay advance tax?
Anyone whose total tax liability for the year, after accounting for TDS, is ₹10,000 or more must pay advance tax. This commonly applies to the self-employed, professionals, and salaried people with substantial extra income (capital gains, interest, rent) that TDS does not fully cover. Most senior citizens without business income are exempt.
What are the advance-tax due dates and instalments?
Advance tax is paid in four instalments: at least 15% of the liability by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Paying each instalment on time avoids interest under Section 234C.
What is 234B and 234C interest?
Section 234C charges interest for paying an instalment late or short; Section 234B charges interest if you have paid less than 90% of your total tax by the end of the year. Both are levied at a monthly rate on the shortfall, so under-estimating income can add meaningfully to your bill. Confirm the exact computation with a CA.
