FIRE — the corpus that lets you stop working, and the number behind it
FIRE — Financial Independence, Retire Early — is the point at which your investments are large enough that a sustainable withdrawal covers your living expenses, so paid work becomes optional. The core idea is often framed as a multiple of your annual expenses (commonly around 25x, linked to a roughly 4% annual withdrawal), but the right multiple for India leans higher because inflation and longer retirements demand a more cautious withdrawal.
This calculator estimates your FIRE number from your annual expenses and a chosen safe-withdrawal rate, and how long it could take to reach it given your savings and expected return. Because a FIRE corpus may need to last 40–50 years, small changes in the withdrawal rate, return and inflation assumptions move the target a lot — so it is worth testing a few scenarios rather than trusting a single number.
How this calculator works
- 1Enter your annual expenses, expected return and a safe withdrawal rate.
- 2The calculator derives the corpus needed (expenses ÷ withdrawal rate) and the years to reach it given your current savings and monthly investment.
- 3Adjust the withdrawal rate and return to see how sensitive the target and timeline are.
Frequently asked questions
What is a FIRE number?
Your FIRE number is the corpus at which a sustainable annual withdrawal covers your expenses. A common shorthand is 25 times your annual expenses (a 4% withdrawal rate), but many Indian investors target a lower withdrawal rate — and therefore a larger multiple — to allow for higher inflation and a long retirement.
Does the 4% withdrawal rule work in India?
The 4% guideline came from long US market history and is only a starting point. In India, higher inflation and potentially longer retirements lead many planners to use a more conservative withdrawal rate (for example 3–3.5%), which raises the corpus you need. This calculator lets you set the rate yourself.
What is the difference between lean FIRE and fat FIRE?
Lean FIRE targets a modest lifestyle on a smaller corpus; fat FIRE targets a comfortable or generous lifestyle and therefore a much larger corpus. Both use the same maths — corpus = annual expenses ÷ withdrawal rate — the difference is the level of annual expenses you plan for.
