Your net worth — the one number that tracks real progress
Net worth is the simplest honest measure of your financial position: everything you own (assets) minus everything you owe (liabilities). Income tells you what flows in; net worth tells you what you have actually built. Tracking it once or twice a year turns vague feelings about money into a clear trend line you can act on.
This calculator totals your assets — cash, investments, property, EPF/PPF, gold — and subtracts your liabilities — home loan, car loan, credit-card and personal debt — to give your net worth and its breakdown. Watching the number rise over time, and seeing how much of your assets are productive (investments) versus lifestyle (a self-occupied home or car), is more useful than any single snapshot.
How this calculator works
- 1List your assets — savings, investments, retirement accounts, property, gold and other valuables.
- 2List your liabilities — loans and outstanding debts.
- 3The calculator subtracts liabilities from assets to give your net worth and a breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
What is net worth?
Net worth is the total value of what you own minus the total of what you owe. Assets include cash, investments, retirement balances, property and gold; liabilities include home, car, personal and credit-card loans. A positive and rising net worth is the clearest sign that your finances are moving in the right direction.
What is a good net worth for my age?
There is no universal figure — it depends on income, cost of living and goals. More useful than comparing to others is your own trend: is your net worth rising year on year, and is a growing share of it in productive assets (investments) rather than depreciating ones? Track the direction, not just the number.
How often should I calculate my net worth?
Once or twice a year is enough for most people. Reviewing it annually — say at the start of the financial year — lets you see the trend, check whether debts are falling and investments rising, and course-correct without obsessing over short-term market moves.
