The rupee touched a lifetime low of approximately ₹95.7. FIIs were dumping. Brent had ticked back above $100. Somewhere between ₹10 lakh crore and ₹16 lakh crore of investor wealth was wiped in just four trading sessions from the prior Friday's close. WhatsApp groups lit up. Television anchors switched to red. Retail investors began typing the words "redeem" and "stop SIP" into their broker apps.
Forty-eight hours later, on Wednesday May 14, the same indices put on one of the sharpest single-day recoveries of 2026. The Sensex rallied +789 points. The Nifty closed at 23,689.60, up +277 points (+1.18%). Pharma surged +2.74%, IT itself rebounded +2.2%, and FIIs — yes, the same FIIs who had been selling all week — turned net buyers at ₹187 crore. By Friday close, the Nifty was at 23,643.50, down just 2.2% for the entire week. The headline-screaming-crash and the actual outcome were two very different things.
That gap — between what the headlines made it feel like and what the portfolio actually did — is the gap where most retail wealth is destroyed. Not on the day of the crash. In the days after, when the temptation to "do something" becomes overwhelming and rational long-term investors press buttons they will regret for a decade.
VUCA stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous. It is a framework coined by the US Army War College in the early 1990s to describe the post-Cold War strategic environment — a world where the old playbooks of Cold War deterrence no longer applied, where threats came from many directions at once, and where leaders had to make decisions without complete information. All three feel reasonable in different parts of the brain. The "stop" voice is the protective parent voice — let us not lose what we have built. The "redeem" voice is the trauma voice — let us not feel this pain again. The "increase" voice is the opportunist voice — Buffett said be greedy when others are fearful, so let us be greedy.
Here is the inconvenient truth: history has tested all three responses through every Indian market crisis of the past 23 years. The data is unambiguous about which one builds wealth and which two destroy it. The data is also unambiguous that the answer is not the same for every investor — it depends on your specific situation, not on the Nifty's mood. That is the single most important sentence in this article, and we will come back to it.
What Past Indian Crises Actually Did to Disciplined SIP Investors

The 18-month gap of "waiting for safety" cost roughly 40% of the final corpus. Not because of bad fund selection. Because of behavioural cowardice during exactly the months when units were on sale.
The 2020 COVID Lesson
The Nifty fell from 12,201 on January 14, 2020 to 7,610 on March 23, 2020 — a -38% crash in nine weeks. There has been no faster equity-market dislocation in modern Indian history. By November 2020, just over seven months later, the Nifty was back above 13,000 and making fresh all-time highs. Investors who panic-redeemed near the March 23 bottom realised approximately a -38% loss on the equity portion of their portfolios. Investors who held — and crucially, continued their SIPs through the crash — saw the entire drawdown reverse in nine months and the corpus grow another 22% over the subsequent 18 months.
The most remarkable data point from that period is buried in AMFI's monthly bulletin: SIP registrations hit an all-time high in May 2020, the very month when equity NAVs were at multi-year lows. Millions of disciplined Indians — many of them new investors who had never seen a crash before — understood the assignment. They were not buying the dip with lump sums. They were doing something more powerful: they were starting new SIPs at low NAVs that would compound for decades. Those SIPs registered in May 2020 are today some of the highest-IRR cohorts in the AMFI database.

Brent was $126 three weeks ago, $101 last week, $109 this week. Trying to time SIPs to oil prices is a fool's errand because oil itself does not know where it is going from week to week.
The only macro variable that genuinely matters for a 10+ year SIP horizon is India's nominal GDP growth — which has been 9-11% for two decades, is currently still in that band, and is broadly expected to remain there.
