What is the Time Value of Money?
A rupee today is worth more than a rupee tomorrow, because a rupee in hand today can be invested and can start earning a return right away. TVM is the mathematical framework behind every SIP, lump sum, and goal calculator — it links five variables together: Present Value (what you have today), Future Value (what you want it to grow into), Payment (a recurring contribution), Rate (the return you expect), and Time (how long you stay invested). Give the calculator any four of these, and it solves for the fifth.
Why it matters for SIP planning
Every goal-planning question — “how much monthly SIP do I need?”, “what corpus will this build to?”, “how long will it take?” — is really the same TVM equation, just solved for a different variable.
Compounding frequency matters
A 12% annual rate compounded monthly grows faster than the same 12% compounded yearly, because interest is credited — and starts earning further interest — more often.
A live example
To find the monthly investment that reaches a ₹1 Cr goal in 15 years at an assumed 12% p.a., switch to the “Payment” tab above — that is exactly the default scenario loaded on this page.
Note: this calculator treats your lump sum and recurring payments as amounts building toward the same target (not as opposing cash flows on a financial calculator's signed timeline), so all results are shown as plain positive rupee figures for readability.
