Turning a corpus into a monthly income — how an SWP works

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan does the opposite of a SIP: instead of adding a fixed amount each month, you withdraw one, while the rest of your corpus stays invested and continues to grow. It is a common way to draw a regular income in retirement from a mutual fund corpus, and it can be more tax-efficient than dividends because only the gains portion of each withdrawal is taxed.

The key question an SWP raises is sustainability: if you withdraw faster than the corpus grows, it depletes; withdraw more slowly and it can last indefinitely or even keep rising. This calculator projects how long your corpus lasts for a given monthly withdrawal and expected return, so you can set a withdrawal that matches the number of years you need the income to run.

How this calculator works

  • 1Enter your corpus, the monthly amount you want to withdraw, and an expected return.
  • 2The calculator deducts each withdrawal and grows the remaining balance month by month.
  • 3It shows how long the corpus lasts, and the balance remaining over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is an SWP tax-efficient?

Often, yes. In an SWP only the capital-gains portion of each withdrawal is taxed, not the full amount, and long-term equity gains enjoy a concessional rate with an annual exemption. This usually compares favourably with fully-taxed interest income or the older dividend route — but confirm the current rules with a Chartered Accountant.

How much can I safely withdraw each month?

A sustainable withdrawal depends on your return and how long the money must last. As a rough guide, withdrawing around 4% of the corpus a year (adjusted for inflation) has historically been durable, though many Indian planners use a more conservative rate. This calculator lets you test a withdrawal against a horizon so you can see whether the corpus survives it.

Will an SWP deplete my corpus?

Only if you withdraw faster than the corpus grows. If your withdrawal rate is below the net return, the balance can stay level or even rise; above it, the corpus shrinks and eventually runs out. The calculator shows the crossover for your numbers.
